EPDM is the abbreviation of “Ethylene – Propylene – Diene Monomer” and refers to a group of synthetic rubbers or elastomers obtained by the polymerization of ethylene (= ethylene), propylene (= propylene) and a diene.
This material has a number of attractive properties, such as:
- high elasticity (up to 400%), and this over a wide temperature range from -35°C to + 120°C
- good resistance to many bases, acids (including fatty acids) and salts (but not to petroleum products) and to ozone and UV rays
- a long service life of at least 50 years.
EPDM rubber has been used since around 1963 and has many applications, including in construction (roof sealing), the automotive sector (sealing rings (O-rings), sealing strips on windows and doors), belts, conveyor belts and hoses (e.g. garden hoses), electrical insulation, pond liners, etc.
At Qseals we use EPDM (EPR) as sealing rings (O-rings) and gaskets in some of our mechanical seals.
