Floating seals

Looking for floating seals? Then you have come to the right place at Qseals. Every type of seal has its own application, and floating seals are made for the toughest conditions: mud, sand, water and heavy loads. On this page you can read how a floating seal works, the names it goes by and where it is used.

What is a floating seal?

A floating seal is a metal face seal for rotating parts. It consists of two identical metal seal rings, usually made of hardened cast iron or alloy steel, and two rubber elements, such as O-rings. The metal rings are known for their high hardness and wear resistance.

Other names for floating seals

Floating seals are sold under many different names. They all refer to the same type of seal:

  • Duo cone seals
  • Metal face seals or mechanical face seals
  • Face seals
  • Heavy duty seals
  • Lifetime seals
  • Toric seals
  • Floating ring seals

How does a floating seal work?

The two metal rings are fitted with their lapped seal faces against each other. Each ring sits in its own housing with a rubber element. One ring stays stationary in the fixed housing, while the other rotates with the moving part, such as a wheel hub or track roller. The rubber element has two jobs: it presses the seal faces together with an even force and at the same time seals the ring against the housing. A thin oil film between the seal faces provides lubrication. This keeps the oil in and dirt, sand and water out, even as the seal faces wear.

What are floating seals used for?

Floating seals reduce downtime of machines that work in extreme conditions. They withstand abrasive media, shock loads and changing temperatures, and offer a long service life with little maintenance. You will find them in, among others:

  • excavators, bulldozers and other tracked vehicles, for example in track and carrier rollers and final drives;
  • civil engineering, road construction and hydraulic engineering machinery;
  • agricultural machinery;
  • mining equipment and tunnel boring machines;
  • conveyor belts, mixers and other industrial installations.

Floating seals are highly versatile and are used wherever a reliable, long-lasting seal is required.
